Dear ULESites,
[TLDR, scroll to the bottom for Study Resources and Upcoming Events + Giveaway]
The second semester is upon us, and this means we get to see each other again. Heaven knows I missed the feeling of getting dressed for classes, the superstar moment of walking into the engineering market and being every vendor’s “My Love”, the ofada woman,… I could go on. Sadly, all those were ripped from us in the virtual first semester. But hey, we get to do it again!
Maybe The CGPA Is The Friends Along The Way?
As much as I want to share my excitement for this semester and the MANY events that will be coming from it, let’s do a quick academic vibe check first… Have you seen your results? Have they seen you? 👀
A lot of us are on the edges of our seats, waiting for last semester’s results to drop, telling ourselves that seeing them would somehow help us prepare for the next semester. Well, I’ll tell you for free: Cumulative GPA means every semester counts, or quite literally, “adds up”. Hence, this semester counts just as much as the previous one, and so will semesters to come. So you’re left with the choice of letting the anxiety over results (seen and unseen) get to you, or picking yourself up and moving on to the next agenda. However, I do wish us all well, and so you’ll find a couple of (hopefully helpful) study resources at the end of this post.
Hostel Prices? In This Economy? 🥹
Balloting came like a (literal) thief in the night, and that struck many nerves. If I had a castle I wasn’t using, I’d house every student in the faculty. But that’s unrealistic (considering about 4000+ bedspaces), and a girl can only dream. What I can do is share unsolicited advice; If your budget fits, you could explore private hostels or apartments in and around campus. Say a prayer while you do, though, because these agents often give penthouse prices for self-cons. Start early, too, because the last thing you want in this semester of distractions is to add distance to one of them. Speaking of distractions…
Did sOmEboDY sAy PARTYYYY? 🤩
The highlights of the second semester are the many events coming up, within and outside the faculty. Faculty weeks, faculty dinners, grand finales, hall weeks, pageants, and other events within and outside the faculty. Save up your coins because there’s money to be spent and times to be had. Even if you’re an introvert, it’s also a good time for you to be comfortable alone since everyone else will be outside.
Student Politics? 🗳
For now, I’ll keep my thing brief here: Elections will be upon us shortly. For those who celebrate, please start getting ready. 👍🏽
(Hopefully Helpful) Study Resources 📚
With so many courses ahead, there isn’t a single fixed pattern for tackling all of them. You can, however, find unique patterns by (1) Getting information from previous students of the course, and (2) Studying the lecturer while you read the course. Your time management and accountability will be tested this semester, so having an accountability partner and tracking your progress would go a long way in helping you meet your goals, both academic and non-academic. Above all, remember you’re no machine, but even they need occasional reboots. Find what helps you recharge, be it music, movies, quality time, or anything soothing. Your health and well-being should be your number one priority, because there’s nothing as important.
As for resources, I made these Study Tracker and Course Checklist templates that get me through every semester. Since both are designed for accountability and progress tracking, it helps reduce the insecurity of the “I’ve not read anything” scam. Feel free to make a copy and even modify it to your taste!

I hope you find these helpful when studying. I wouldn’t, though. I’m on IT :). But you’ll be fine.
Upcoming Events + GIVEAWAY!!! 🕑
I might not have a castle I’m not using, but I do have a couple gifts to go around. ECX Soft Skills Training is open to applications, and the ULES ARB is seeking donations of essential study and drawing materials!

To win my prize(s), you need to send proof that you donated your drawing materials AND registered for the soft skills training. If you do one but not the other, nothing for you! But really though, we look forward to more contributions to all of our faculty events.
Send proof of your participation through this Google Form
With love, to your best semester yet! 🥂
